Earl Serge Tolstoy
Grandson of the writer Leo Tolstoy, Serge Tolstoy experienced the atmosphere of Yasnaya Polyana as it was during his grandfather's lifetime. After the October Revolution of 1917, his parents fled Russia to take refuge in France, where Serge Tolstoy became a doctor. His thesis focused on Pharaoh Amenhotep IV and Marfan syndrome.
While living in Paris, Serge Tolstoy, however, remained in contact with those of Leo Tolstoy's children who continued to live in the Soviet Union and himself went to Moscow several times to meet them. After gathering family archives and collecting the testimony of his uncles and aunts, he published numerous articles as well as three works devoted to the Tolstoy family.
In 1977, Serge Tolstoy founded the Friends of Leo Tolstoy association. He had two sons from each of his two marriages.
