Sophie Gladky Kedroff

Born into the family of a general of the Russian army, Sophie Gladky Kedroff is the wife of Nicolas Kedroff Sr. She studied at the Catherine Institute, one of the most privileged educational institutions in St. Petersburg. She then entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory to study singing (1893-1898, professors N. A. Iretskaya, O. Palechek). After graduating from the conservatory, she performed at the Moscow Russian Private Opera of S. Mamontov, becoming there the very first performer of the role of Domna Saburova in the premiere of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "The Tsar's Bride"; October 22, 1899. In 1900, she made her debut on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, in the role of Margarita in the opera Faust. Her debut was a success and she was hired as an employee of the theatre as a soloist until 1905. At the same time, from 1903, she taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.

In 1922, some time after the revolution, the Kedroff family emigrated. First to Berlin, then in 1928, they settled in Paris, where the Kedroffs decided to stay. The couple founded the Paris Conservatory of Russian Music. Other Russian musicians, such as V. I. Strakhova, E. I. Teryan-Korganova, also taught there. She participated in the historical concerts of Russian music in Paris (1925). She was a member of the Council of the Russian Musical Society Abroad (RMOS).
